Balance of mind and body

Philosophical approach towards self-actualization has always floundered in one conflict that, whether we are 'soul' or 'body'. What is the truth of our existence? Who we are? Mind and soul has no physical appearance but their mysterious experience prove their permanent existence. Body has its physical appearance but has temporary and mortal existence. Ancient philosophers either focused on 'soul and mind' or on 'body' but spirituality plays key role in ending this conflict. Spirituality says that we are combination of both. Soul needs this body to attain enlightenment. However, due to lack of knowledge we only believe in body and its pleasure. This is what materialistic approach suggests to believe. Most of our activities are body centered. We think of it, and work for it to make it better and in coordination to surrounding.

'Patanjali' in his 'Yoga Sutras' says that, mind too is made up of muscles like body, and need the same attention and care as body need to stay healthy. Human being work to stay physically fit but only few works to keep them mentally fit. Spirituality asks for both. Spirituality says that, physical skills are not enough. There has to be a balance between mind and body. Mind has to be open and clean. A story depicts that how a person who is focused to body only, lacks in discipline of mind.

"After winning several archery contests, the young and rather boastful champion challenged a Zen master who was renowned for his skill as an archer. The young man demonstrated remarkable technical proficiency when he hit a distant bull's eye on his first try, and then split that arrow with his second shot.

"There," he said to the old man, "see if you can match that!"
