Monitoring Thoughts

Factincept(Flame up the ideas, Incept the facts)

The world of thoughts in mind is like asteroids in the universe, which are countless and of different sizes, always on journey, beyond the capabilities of human being to understand their behavior, which changes every second. Human mind with no doubt is a mystery still to solve, mysterious not only from a Neuro-scientific point of view but also from a practical point, personal point and in day to day life also. In this deep mysterious world, whether you are awaken or in deep sleep, you are in conscious or unconscious state, irrespective of your physical body condition, thought keeps on generating and processed. Initially, one may think that he/she fully understand his/her mind and is aware about its processes, but actually you are in a state of delusion. You will agree when you get a total view of realm of thoughts, how it has trapped you even without informing you or giving a hint of it? That’s the unique quality of thoughts.
Thoughts
What is thought?
A disciple and his teacher were strolling on a beach. It was a cold day, strong wind was blowing and the waves were rising high.
After walking for some time, teacher stopped, looked at his disciple and asked:
"What does the choppy ocean remind you?"
"It reminds me of my mind, where thoughts are flooding making it restless", answered disciple.
Teacher said, “Yes, the stormy ocean is like the mind, and the waves are like thoughts. The mind is neutral like water. It is neither good, nor bad. The wind is causing waves to generate, in the same way as desire or fear produce thoughts".
"I wouldn't want to be on a boat, in the middle of the ocean, in a storm like this", said disciple.
"All the time you sail on the boat." teacher responded and continued, "Most people are on a rudderless boat in the middle of a choppy ocean, even if they do not realize it. The mind of most people is very restless. All kinds of thoughts come and go incessantly, agitating the mind like the ocean waves."
Story continues with a series of doubts by disciple and clarification by teacher. Isn’t it practically deals with mind and its processes? We may get amazed because we never had thought in this way about thoughts. We never had monitored our thoughts even casually. But thoughts have always monitored us, destined us. Thoughts affect us so much that, who conquered it, called as “Buddha”; an enlightened person; you may ignore it, but cannot skip from it. Thought can be anything; it can be like an idea, like a picture, like memory, or like a song. Whenever, any one of the human senses comes in touch of thoughts, respected stimuli generates. Thoughts especially in humans are much complicated and generally are not independent. They are usually short-lived discrete events, unlike a continuous event such as the constant murmurs of air conditioners and rain. Anything that we say or do is followed by a long series of conscious- unconscious thoughts and its process.
For example:-
“If somebody asks you; who is Charlie Chaplin?” in between his question and your answer, there is a chain of so many thoughts occur in your mind. First your mind analyze question than think automatically. “Do I know Charlie Chaplin”? All the pages of magazines in which you have read about him get processed without your conscious involvement. Your mind interacts to self, “Is there anything else about him or anything significant I am missing?” “Why he is asking this to me?” and so many other questions. One simple thought for a human is not so simple but it is complex; one single thought for human is not single it is more than one thought. Our brain is capable of generating more and more simultaneous thoughts. This all is a game of our infinite memory which has no boundaries, no limit.
If we divide our mind as psychology does; it is ‘conscious, sub-conscious and unconscious’. Thoughts are processed in ascending manner in these three parts. In the above example, the question asked and answer given is the activity of conscious mind, in this part we only know that what’s going in mind, what mind has listened and what it is going to say. Then some remembered incidents are of subconscious and rest all thought process is of unconscious mind. Means we are only aware to that thought, which we witness in that particular moment, knowingly or accidently. And this known witnessing is called ‘monitoring’. Monitoring of thought is very important before we discuss value of thoughts. One more fact need to be mentioned here is that, about 75% of our thoughts are repeated. Very rarely we think something new; maximum thoughts are related to something previous. We either live in past or in future, rarely, we live in present. The moment we start monitoring our thoughts, we start dealing our present.
With this it is also true that around 90% of our thoughts are useless, for example, anywhere in world one can find people involved in discussion about personal life of celebrities, with whom her/his favourite celebrity is in affair or whom they are going to marry. Like in India marriage of Aishwrya Rai was like national issue. The method which can help you is, just stop anytime anywhere, and try to get a feel of- what you are thinking at that moment? You will be amazed that suddenly cloud of some thought disappears and you are witnessing a clear full moon, at this point you will realize that all those thoughts which disappeared were worthless. It will be like a glimpse of what enlightened people must have felt, when all their thoughts got disappeared. And if you want a practical demonstration of this method; do it right now; stop!! And now see how many thoughts other than reading this article are running in your mind. Monitoring of thought is first step towards enlightment, the day you start monitoring your thoughts you will find a change in your mood, a change in state of your mind. It’s all psychological.  And when you master yourself in monitoring, then judging and controlling becomes easy, because it’s the first step………start from now…..remember what Swami Vivekananda said :-
“We are what our thoughts have made us; so take care about what you think. Words are secondary. Thoughts live; they travel far.”
