The Law Addiction

Around the globe there is one similarity between people, they think that every political or religious issues can only be resolved by law framed for it. Like a child becomes happy with gifted toys by parents and remains within self, similarly government of various countries toys to its citizens by providing laws, when they get inflamed on any issue. What happens then, government is able to buy time, with time citizens gets cold and government takes credit for solving the problem, everyone becomes happy. The saddest part is, that the government which played a trick by framing a law, gets backing of citizens for the same law, which is a mere problem solving illusion, and they start appreciating their leader and their leadership qualities.
It’s an irony of misunderstanding, if we think 100 percent solution of a problem through laws. For issues which we can self resolve, we stand helplessly in front of government to solve it. Actually, the problem is not, we cannot do it; the problem is we don’t want to do it. Why? Because we had been slaves for so many centuries, therefore the root is still inside us which staunch us to go free and rise above.
Like suppose while going inside a public office, any government servant ill-treated us, we start saying that there should be a law for this kind of illicit behavior. Did law can rectify it fully?
Similarly, during construction of roads in village, if contractor is muddling things, we start raising voice for a law. Did law will actually help in eradicating it from its root?
Farmers are not able to make profit and farming is getting worse day by day, we expect a proper law to take place to address the issue. What do you feel, how many laws helped in addressing the cause?
The answer is no. Any law alone can’t address or solve any issue, esp. when it comes to common citizens of any country. When lawmakers are themselves corrupt, can you expect them to do anything special for us? A very prominent thinker of France said-
“When ignorance reigns in society and disorder in the minds of men, laws are multiplied, legislature is expected to do everything and each fresh law being a fresh miscalculation, men are continually led to demand from it which can only proceed from themselves, from their own morality.”
Laws are a form of maze, in which common citizen helplessly crawl to find an instant solution, but he forgets that a maze is meant to make things look simple by showing an elegant solution, besides making it practically complex.
Benjamin Disraeli said-“When men are pure, laws are useless; when men are corrupt, laws are broken.”
Now let’s understand in a more practical way where you can get the exact idea and it will also justify our subject. In India, government passed Right to Information Act (RTI) after so much hard work and pressure create by many social workers and groups. There was a deja-vu inside government before passing this Act, on being subjected to transparency which they have never faced up till now. But now we have RTI in between us which was projected as a mortar in hands of common citizens of India, but did it really helped. Yes, it helped, but only to those people who got proper backing of big stake holders.
Just try to understand, since the time RTI was ready to be used many corruption cases came out, but only those whose magnitude of impact was really high, huge money was involved. These cases became fodder for media; they used RTI as a tool to take out information continuously and deeply without being subjected to fear. They fulminate all the time using RTI as their business tool on issues related to public domain. The moot point here is they did because they got backup of money, proper and precise knowledge but what happens when we analyze the benefits of RTI for a common citizen. Does it really help a common man? Many RTI activists shot dead when they tried to dig information because there was no backing for them and most importantly nothing happened after they lost their life. Can we use RTI to bring out information related to any public construction work or any public office, and there after question that public servant? And if we question him, what will happen next? We may get warning first, or later we may also lose our lives, therefore, the safest option is to keep quiet.
If we can conclude, we will find that RTI worked only partially, and most importantly not worked for those, for whom it was framed. Similarly, a big anti-corruption crusade is running now days by social groups. Some raising voices for black money while some demanding ‘Lokpal Bill’ which will help common citizen. The tone and its intensity of voice against black money got changed when the leader saw the government power in midnight but the voice for Lokpal Bill is getting intensified. Now the problem is, it will be another law as various other laws and will act accordingly. We have seen enough of laws. How they work? What’s their end result? But still we are demanding it continuously in-spite of acting self. Are we deaf? Are we blind? Are we mentally retarded? Or, are we not mature enough to see the partial effects of laws which never help us to get out of this painful situation.
Or we are unable to get out from mental slavery, are the some questions need to be understood and answered by you because, good people do not need laws to tell them to act responsibly, while bad people will find a way around the law.
