Facebook users beware after this trap -

When Bheemsingh Bhati, a resident of Ghodasar, recently went to Vastrapur Lake to meet his beloved whom he had met through Facebook, he was instead met by officials of Vastrapur police station who were looking for him for the past one year. Bhati, an accused in vehicle theft cases, was lured by none other than the police who had created a fake Facebook profile of the girl Bhati had come to meet.

According to sources, Bhati, 24, a native of Rajasthan, had been caught earlier by city crime branch for vehicle thefts. Now he was wanted by Vastrapur police for an SUV theft. The challenge for the policemen was that Bhati used to leave Gujarat with a stolen vehicle and spend money on girls and come back only for another theft.

A constable with the surveillance squad conversant with technology, searched for the young thief on Facebook and, to his luck, found his profile. The key fact of the discovery was that most of his friends were females. It gave the constable a start as he created a fake profile with photograph of an attractive woman.

"The trick worked. Bhati accepted the friend request and started chatting with the constable who pretended to be a married woman. Gradually, Bhati became so obsessed with the persona that he kept on requesting to meet 'her' in person. She invited him to Vastrapur Lake to which Bhati agreed readily. In April, police kept a watch when Bhati had promised to come," said a Vastrapur police official.

True to his words, Bhati appeared in flashy clothes and started searching for the woman for whom he had taken a chance to visit the city. Soon, policemen waiting for him approached him and directed him towards the police van.

"Bhati has confessed to stealing vehicles from Isanpur, Ramol, Ghodasar, Vatva and other police stations. Search for the stolen vehicles is on," said a Vastrapur police official.
