Control Your Thoughts
What is the essence of spirituality? What is that on
which all psychological healer works? What is that about which all spiritual
healers preach? In few simple words it
is ‘control of your thoughts’. This is third and final step after monitoring
and judging of thoughts. Before moving forth let me remind the core theme of
monitoring and judging of thoughts which was delineated in last two articles
‘Monitoring Your Thoughts’ followed by ‘Judging Your thoughts’. It is ‘what you
are and where you are today is because of your thoughts in past, and where you going
to stand tomorrow will depends upon today’s thoughts as thoughts have always
destined us.’
You are the only architecture of everything which occurs
in your life. You can make it as you wish but, remember whatever you build you
are the only one going to live in that. Then why not to design it beautifully? And
the first step you can take to build it better is, ‘control your thoughts’. You
create your life through your thoughts and every thought that comes in your
mind has some energy. Some carries positive energy and some carries negative
energy. Relating practically all thoughts which are meaningful, have positive
power and all useless thoughts carries negative energy. Latest research has
shown that negative thoughts like jealousy, hatred, envy etc; secretes
poisonous chemicals in brain which affects memory, brain efficiency and causes
psychological diseases. For example, psychologists find in their research and
therapies that negative thinking is one of the prominent reasons for depression
and so many bi-polar disorders (like maniac depression). Dementia too which is
a common disease is caused by negative thoughts. Also, negative thoughts seem
to be much more frequent in the human mind than positive thoughts. Now you must
have understood vulnerability of thoughts. The world of thoughts is the source
of power in your material world, as what you think in your life, your inner
consciousness silently starts working on that. It is your natural power. Even
without your knowledge you are using it every day, every minute and in fact
every second.
Somebody said once that, “it doesn’t matter how someone died,
but how he lived matters”. But it’s only
halfway on the path of truth, it is even better to live and die both worthily.
And to lead a worthy and better life and also to die worthily, the only way is
to take control of your thoughts. Nature of thoughts is fickle and will follow
its nature. One of the greatest Hinduism scripture ‘Bhagavadgita’ gives too
much emphasis on the control of the mind. Arjuna says, "The mind is very
fickle indeed O Krishna, turbulent, strong and obstinate. I think it is as
impossible to control the mind as the wind." The beauty of these lines is
in comparison of thoughts with wind, because after that nothing is left to tell
about mind’s nature. But we must remember that solution is always found near problem.
Don’t act like that poor old lady, whose needle lost in room but she was searching
out in light with logic that there is darkness inside room. It’s your mind,
your thoughts, thus it’s only you who can help yourself. It may take time; it
needs effort but will deliver result. Remember even for your degree, you waited
three to four years, and this time its matter of your life so be patient.
Retuning to conversation of Bhagavadgita; in reply of
Arjuna’s query about thoughts and mind, Lord Krishna concurs,"
Undoubtedly, O Mighty Armed, it is very difficult to control the ever moving
mind. However, O son of Kunti, through sincere practice and dispassionate
detachment it can be achieved". It is neither magic, nor false hope. There
are so many ways by which it can be achieved; even you too can find your own
path like Gautama Buddha. Jesus too found his own path even if there were various
different paths available on which people have achieved the same before Jesus.
The only thing required is ‘will’ to do, and hit and trial methods. Still to
make your path some methods are discussed below. But before stepping up on them
take few points in mind; after monitoring and judging your thought you have
come across the bunch of useless and negative thoughts, first thing
you must do is that, when negative thoughts pops up into your head, don't
worry, there's nothing wrong. They are
normal like other thoughts. There is no
problem with you. Do not fight with them; fighting these unwanted thoughts
won't keep them away. What you should do at this stage is to find the source of
that thought. Go to the root of that source and work there to stop generation
of them. For example, take a simple case of jealousy. When this type of thought
you monitored and then judged as negative, then now to control and abolish this,
go in depth that what is the reason of jealousy; will jealousy solve the
problem. Suppose your neighbor brought a car and you felt jealous about that.
But being jealous, you cannot bring a car at your door. Therefore it’s worthless
that you are taking tension for something on which your neighbor is enjoying. Best
way to get rid of such situation is reading some good books and try to find some
time to live alone, because things produces thoughts. If you would have not seen
or heard of that car; thoughts would have been generated and thus jealousy
would have not come. It is your brain’s job to think, and it does it all the
time. You can’t stop them; still you can control them by not encouraging the
thoughts.
Now coming to next and most effective way: - Meditation
Meditation is one of the best ways to teach yourself to
control your thoughts. Do not take meditation as a ritual part of any religion;
it’s science, it’s purely psychological which involves the art of concentration
and quietening of the mind. In meditation we not only control our thoughts but
in addition can nurture our inner qualities of peace and oneness. First of all meditation
stops the negative thoughts but as nature dislikes vacuum and it has to be filled
with something. Here it fills with happiness and peace. We must take out some
time for meditation everyday to achieve the above said goal. It is the best way
to awake the power of your subconscious mind. Try to achieve the state of mind as defined in
old scriptures which says,
"A lamp in a windless place is the metaphor that can be
used to describe a person, whose mind is under control and who is united with
his inner Self”.
With each breath and with each pulsation you have designed
your life yourself. Life is really very simple then why to make it complex
because of some useless thoughts. Remember the fact that your thoughts are your
own. Might be influenced by other people
or events, but the final responsibility is yours.
Don't Follow
Your Thoughts.
Monitor them.
Judge them.
Control them.
