Two billion tonnes of food goes in waste every year
'The Institution of Mechanical Engineers' of UK has published a report, according to which around 30% to 50% of the four billion tonnes of food produced goes in waste. This amounts to around two billion tonnes of food which goes un-utilized.

This awful fact given by the institute raises some serious questions about the food management done around the world, even by the most prosperous economies of world.

The report further highlights that half of the food purchased in Europe and US were thrown un-utilized or even rejected by mere physical appearance. The staggering figure also reflects the respect towards the food among the able class which prefers per-processed food over the food which requires cooking. According to report of 'Global Food; Waste not, want not' as much as 550 billion cubic metres of water were utilized for crops which were never eaten.

The supermarket culture might promote purchase of foods by providing one on one free, but around the world a better management and study on it can only prevent this humungous loss.

According to United Nations Food and Agriculture organisation's 2012 report, there are around 925 million people around the globe which are undernourished. 925 million makes around 13 percent of the total world population, which means that one in seven people are hungry. What makes it more awful that mostly children are the victims of under nutrition due to which they suffer about 160 days of illness every year. Under-nutrition also accounts for the death of 5 million humans each year. For a pregnant woman under-nutrition is hazardous, due to which, 1 out of 6 infants born underweight, with a very high risk of several types of disabilities, neonatal deaths, blindness and premature death.

There is enough food in the world to feed the population but what is not enough with the people, is ability to purchase and feed themselves and their children. Therefore, if in-spite of wasting food we can provide the same to those who are incapable, we can serve the human kind in a very valuable manner. It will also avoid the exploitation of the natural resources which are being engineered in a non-fruitful way to maximize the yielding.

Often reports of ill-management of food stored come out in underdeveloped countries like India where tonnes of food grains get rotten out in government stores due to negligence and proper care. World has to adopt a better management and distribution system of food harvested. It has been said that report published may not be very accurate; but the fact of the matter is, food is getting wasted and we need to stop it.
