Importance of concentration in spirituality

“Concentration of mind is inversely proportional to the goodness of work we try to do.”-------- Raghvendra

Importance of concentration in every sphere of life is well known to everyone who thinks to make her/his life better. Let it be matter of effective study, matter of job output or matter of creativity etc., all demands a high level of attention and concentration. In fact nothing great could be achieved without concentration. In general terms, concentration means, to free the mind from all sort of distraction, excavate all unnecessary thoughts of mind and to focus all the mental capabilities on a point. The power of convergence can be illustrated with example that normally the rays of sun do not burn a paper till the time they are dispersed but if the rays of sun are converged on paper with the help of lens, it burns the paper at once. Similarly, converging your mental capabilities enhances the output.

Ralph Waldo Emerson describes its importance in words that, “Concentration is the secret of strength.”

In the same manner spirituality also demands a dignified level of concentration for its practices, or we can say that it is the first and foremost practice for spiritual seekers. Some saint has said that,

“The degree of freedom from unwanted thoughts and the degree of concentration on a single thought are the measures to gauge spiritual progress.”
Spirituality compares our mind with undisciplined and unruly children and believes that it is very important to regulate them. Raghvendra’ said, ‘it is amazing fact that, concentration of mind is inversely proportional to the goodness of work we try to do.’ And spirituality is about the ultimate goodness and virtue so as that law here. Here with a story tells the importance of concentration, that how when focus of a person shifted from his wife to divine, he became enlightened.

“In ancient India there lived a man who was passionately in love with his beautiful wife. All his thoughts were constantly absorbed in her; he had no other desire than to be with her every waking moment. One night he tried to enter her room to visit her when he found the door unexpectedly locked. He knocked, but there was no answer. Thinking her to be asleep, he ran outside the house and leapt up the wall to her window, grabbing a climbing vine for support. Driven by his desire to be with her, he burst through the window.

She was shocked. "How did you get up here?" she cried, "the wall is so high!"

"I climbed up the vine,” he answered.
